The Watchman is a 6,545-foot sandstone summit in Zion National Park, immediately east of Springdale and rising about 2,600 feet above the town and Zion Canyon floor. Prominently marking the park’s south end, it has become one of Zion’s most recognizable views and appears to guard the entrance to the canyon. Set between the North and East Forks of the Virgin River and facing Mount Kinesava, it is composed of Navajo Sandstone with red shale from the Kayenta Formation on its lower slopes. Officially named in 1934, it was once known as Flanigan Peak after a pioneer family whose homestead stood at its base.
