In Savannah, Georgia, this site preserves part of the historic Central of Georgia Railway shops and terminal complex, widely regarded as the most complete antebellum railroad complex in the United States. The Central Rail Road and Canal Company began operations here in the 1830s, and as the line grew, it developed a major repair complex with shops, a roundhouse, and other industrial buildings. Expanded through the 1920s and rebuilt in part after a 1923 fire, the grounds preserve Victorian railroad architecture, machinery, steam equipment, locomotives, and rolling stock. Closed after railroad consolidation, the property later became a museum and preservation site open to the public.
