Moulton Church of Christ is one of the oldest congregations of the Churches of Christ in Alabama, born of the Restoration Movement that sought to restore the Christian Church to its biblical roots. That movement began in both Europe and America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The church was established by B. F. Hall, a traveling evangelist from Kentucky and a disciple of pioneer preacher Barton W. Stone. Over the years it hosted several Restoration leaders, and Tolbert Fanning was especially important in its early growth and in the conversion of David Ligon, a Moulton lawyer who became a leader and preacher in the church for several years before the Civil War. Ligon died in 1845 while delivering a sermon from the pulpit. The congregation met in the Lawrence County Courthouse until about 1840, then occupied a first building on Seminary Street, a second on South Street, and has remained in its present downtown Moulton location since 1925. Until about 1890 it was known as Moulton Christian Church, and among the family names associated with it in its early days were McDonald, Hodges, Preuit, Ligon, Delashaw, Goodlett, Young, and Hodson.
