The first stone marking the commencement of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road was placed here on the Fourth of July, 1828. It was presented by the Stone Cutters of Baltimore, placed by the Grand Lodge of Maryland, assisted by Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of American Independence, and done under the direction of the president and directors of the rail road company.
