The Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad Depot at Frostburg was constructed in 1891 and served as a passenger and freight station on the route from Cumberland, Maryland through the coal-mining region of Georges Creek to Piedmont, West Virginia. The "Old Depot" now serves as the terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The Tunnel Hotel, shown nearby in a 1908 view, was built about 1888 as a stopover offering inexpensive accommodations for travelers seeking a less fashionable hostelry. At times the hotel had an unsavory reputation, and in the early 1920s during Prohibition, although officially vacant, the site maintained a large moonshining enterprise.
