Three Sauk Centre firefighters are honored for dying in the line of duty: Douglas E. Zabel, David J. Kane, and John L. Mullin. Douglas E. Zabel, born January 17, 1947, and David J. Kane, born October 6, 1947, both died on January 7, 1985, while responding to a fire at a local restaurant. Zabel had eight years of service and Kane had ten. When the building’s floor collapsed, they were thrown into a first-floor room fully engulfed in flames, were unable to escape, and died of smoke inhalation at age 37. John L. Mullin, born February 3, 1860, died on June 30, 1893, after sustaining fatal injuries during a routine drill practice for the upcoming Fourth of July parade. Their sacrifice is remembered as part of the Sauk Centre Fire Department’s history, together with a firefighter’s prayer asking for strength to save lives, protect neighbors and property, and bless the families of those who may lose their lives in service.
