Theodore Clement Steele (1847-1926) lived and painted south of here from 1907 to 1926. A member of the Hoosier Group of American impressionists, his landscape paintings captured picturesque panoramas characteristic of the area. The property is a State Historic Site and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
