The Air Force Armament Museum in Valparaiso, Florida, beside Eglin Air Force Base, traces the history and technology of Air Force weaponry through ordnance, firearms, and aircraft. Opened to the public in 1974 in a converted 1940s chapel, it closed in 1981 after that building was condemned and reopened in 1985 in a privately funded new facility. Its displays range from bombs, rockets, guided missiles, and a Fat Man casing to a gun vault and antique pistol collection, while aircraft such as an SR-71, B-52, and MiG-21 expanded the grounds. Later additions included exhibits on prisoners of war, special operations, African American military heritage, education programs, and a memorial F-15E prototype.
