Chincoteague Inlet is a shifting opening on Virginia’s Atlantic Eastern Shore between Assateague and Wallops islands, connecting the ocean toward Chincoteague Channel. About thirty miles south-southwest of Ocean City Inlet, it is known for difficult approaches that rely heavily on navigation marks and local conditions. No sea buoy stands at the entrance, but the lighted buoy R “2” marks Chincoteague Shoals and serves as an approach aid. Offshore, Assateague Light and a lookout tower on Assateague’s southern tip help identify the area. The channel changes frequently, buoys are moved accordingly, breakers line both sides, and a sunken wreck lies southwest of Fishing Point.
