Samuel Powel, a native of Tennessee born in 1821, was a Mexican War veteran and colonel of the 29th Tennessee Infantry. After the Civil War, he moved to Hernando, where he served as a circuit judge, as a Mississippi representative and senator, and as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1890. His house, built about 1870, stood at this site.
