Clearwater National Forest in north central Idaho extends to the Montana line and is centered at Kamiah on the Nez Perce Reservation. Established in 1908 from parts of the Coeur d'Alene and Bitterroot national forests and enlarged in 1934 with land from Selway National Forest, it later became part of the administratively combined Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests in 2012. Covering about 2 million acres, it includes mountains, river drainages, part of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, notable whitewater on the Lochsa and Clearwater systems, abundant wildlife, popular hot springs, and a remembered passage of the Lewis and Clark expedition near Lolo Pass.
