In May 1818, Andrew Jackson, campaigning in the Seminole War with an army of 1200, camped here while moving westward from Fort Gadsden to subdue marauding Indians abetted by Spaniards at Pensacola. Jackson then determined to seize Pensacola, altering the course of history on the continent.
