The Storer Residence / La Résidence Storer
Arundel, Maine · Kennebunk, Maine
History
1
Built in 1758 for Joseph Storer and his wife Hannah, this home belonged to the wealthiest man in Kennebunk, who owned a saw mill, country store, and grist mill. Storer entered the Revolutionary War in 1777, fell ill, and died soon afterward in Albany at age 51. The house was reportedly the first in town to be painted. Its original barn, notable for a tree growing through the roof, was taken down in 1920. The present barn, originally in Sanford, was dismantled, moved here in 1990, and rebuilt around a large maple to resemble the original barn and tree. In 1825, General Marquis de Lafayette visited as a guest of Pricilla Storer.
