Chitwood Bridge is a covered Howe truss road bridge in Lincoln County, Oregon, carrying Chitwood Road over the Yaquina River in the small community of Chitwood near U.S. Route 20. Built by the county in 1926, it stands at a place first established as a stop on the Corvallis-Toledo rail line and named for nearby resident Joshua Chitwood, who lived there during rail construction from 1881 to 1885. Though trains still pass through without stopping, the bridge survived planned demolition through a federally funded restoration completed in 1984. Its preservation left it as one of coastal Oregon’s remaining covered bridges, important both for transportation and for recalling the region’s road-and-rail past.
