Gunset Hill is a mountain in central New York, west of Richfield Springs in Otsego County, on the route of an old Indian trail that once ran from the Mohawk castles along the Mohawk River toward the lands of other Iroquois nations. Earlier known as Bennets Hill, it later took the name Gunset Hill from local early settler practice. The name was said to come from setting guns there for bear hunting at a time when bears were still numerous on the hill, linking the place both to Native travel routes and to the area’s frontier settlement history.
