Newton Township honored its fallen heroes of the Civil War who died in defense of the Union and sleep in unknown graves. Those remembered included David Shoe of Company G, 110 O.V.I.; John A. Book of Company G, 110 O.V.I.; Alfred Hayworth of Company G, 110 O.V.R.; and Jerry W. Teeter, Philip H. Reiber, Martin Elifritz, Josiah Coate, William H. Dunlap, Robert Sheets, Isaac W. Furnas, Henry Long, and Job Pearson. The conflict is identified with the years 1861 - 1865.
