Samuel M. Sampler made a bold charge through hostile fire near St. Etienne, France, on 8 October 1918, resulting in the surrender of twenty-eight enemy soldiers; he died on 19 November 1979. Edward C. Benfold gave his life in Korea on 5 September 1952 while treating two countrymen and defending the wounded. Nelson V. Brittin, though wounded, showed courageous leadership under fire that inspired his company and helped defeat the enemy; he was killed in battle at Yonggong-ni, Korea, on 7 March 1951.
