The Feather River Highway opened to auto traffic on August 14, 1937 as State Route 24, was later redesignated State Route 40A, and finally became State Route 70. The initial cost of this 70 mile stretch was 8 million dollars, and repairs after the February 1986 flood cost over 10 million dollars. On October 2, 1987, a celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the highway’s opening was held at the Plumas County Courthouse in Quincy, with Plumas County Superior Court Judge Stanley C. Young serving as chairman.
