Presidio County was formed from Bexar County, created on January 3, 1850, and organized on March 13, 1875. It was named for the early fortress garrisoned by soldiers, erected for the protection of the Big Bend missions. Its county seat was Fort Davis in 1875 and has been Marfa since 1885.
