In July 1877, "Buffalo Soldiers" of Company A, 10th Cavalry, led by Captain Nolan, traveled through this area tracking raiding Comanche. The soldiers were not prepared for the drought conditions as they crossed Hockley and Cochran Counties. Quanah Parker, who was with the Indians, said he watched the soldiers from a distance and repeatedly led them away from water. As a result of being unprepared, 4 soldiers died.
