Devils Canyon is a steep passage in the Jacumba Mountains of southern California, crossing San Diego and Imperial counties and rising from about 1,109 feet at its mouth to roughly 3,560 feet at its head. For generations it has provided a route through difficult terrain. Beginning in 1862, a wagon road through the canyon connected San Diego and Yuma, helping link the coast with the desert interior. In the modern era, the same corridor became the westbound route of Interstate 8 as it climbs toward Mountain Spring, while eastbound traffic follows a different course through In-Ko-Pah Gorge.
