Hightower Falls in Cedartown, Georgia, centers on an 80-foot waterfall and the remains of a 19th-century milling complex in the Appalachian foothills. Elias Dorsey Hightower developed the site in 1843, first building a cotton gin and then a three-storey mill that produced flour and cornmeal, while nearby land supported sheep tended by Welsh herders housed in the mill. The property survived the Civil War without damage, and afterward Hightower added a dam, tannery, sorghum syrup mill, and beekeeping. Opened as a public attraction in 1972, it soon declined, but since 1996 it has operated again on a limited basis for private bookings and outdoor recreation.
