Peter J Schardt, born in Sackville on October 7, 1878, attended services as a boy in the Immaculate Conception Church founded in 1856. In the U.S. Mail Branch of the government, he did much to promote the present-day system and to demonstrate his loyalty to men and women in the services. Over the years he grew in stature and became a national figure beloved by those with whom he served. His selection by the War and Post Office Department to serve overseas during World Wars I and II in establishing and maintaining mail service with this country was regarded as the highest honor that could come to any man. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the War Department.
