The Danish Village was a Scarborough landmark business, a first-class motel and restaurant built by Portland businessman Henry Rines. The 100-unit complex was probably the finest set of buildings ever erected in the State of Maine on a theme. Architect Peter Holdensen designed it to reflect the architecture of Ribe, a village in his native Denmark. Located on the southerly side of U.S. Route One near Southgate Road, the complex opened in 1930. After the original site was redeveloped and the buildings were burned or demolished, the archway was moved for preservation to Memorial Park, where it remains as the only surviving part of the Danish Village.
