Denver Botanic Gardens is a nonprofit public institution spanning three sites: the formal York Street gardens in Cheesman Park, the meadows and historic farm landscape at Chatfield, and the alpine garden at Mt. Goliath. It is especially known for cold-temperate plants and regional landscapes of Colorado and nearby states, and it played an early influential role in water-wise gardening by creating the world’s first Xeriscape Demonstration Garden in 1986. Notable features include the Shofu-en Japanese Garden, Denver’s first publicly accessible green roof, and the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory, landmarked in 1973. The grounds also occupy part of the former Prospect Hill cemetery.
