Henryton Center
History
3
Opened in 1923 as Maryland's first tuberculosis sanatorium for African Americans, Henryton provided treatment based on fresh air, good food, and sanitary living conditions, with open porches, broad windows, and southern hillside exposure. In 1963 it became Henryton State Hospital Center, serving developmentally disabled adults. Enrollment later declined as therapy shifted to outpatient and home care, and the facility closed in 1985.
