The First Alabama Cavalry was a U.S. Army regiment organized at Huntsville, Alabama, on July 12, 1862, by Special Order No. 100 of Major General Don Carlos Buell and commanded by Colonel George E. Spenser. It remained in service until October 20, 1865. More than 2000 men enlisted in the regiment from Blount, Fayette, Franklin, Marion, Walker, Winston, and other counties, while more than 600 men did not give home counties. It was the only regiment from Alabama in the U.S. Army, while other U.S. Army regiments came from Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. After the war, Colonel Spenser was elected to the U.S. Senate from Alabama. More than 100 men were identified as being from Marion County, Alabama, with their names, ranks, companies, ages, and in some cases dates and causes of death recorded.
