History
2
An Aricara lookout, surprised and badly wounded by a Sioux war party, fled to warn his kinsmen, ran about one-half mile, and fell dead. Admiring his bravery, the Sioux placed a rock for each drop of his blood and built a cairn where he died, marking it with a tribal band insignia of a turtle. The turtle and many of the trail stones remain in place.
