The ruins of Fort Charlotte lie 6.6 miles southwest. Built of local stone from 1765 to 1767, the fort protected the French, British, and German settlements near Long Canes. On July 12, 1775, Maj. James Mayson seized it from Capt. George Whitfield and Lieut. St. Pierre in the name of the Council of Safety, in what was the first overt act of the Revolutionary War in South Carolina.
