Poquoson veterans who died in service are listed from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In World War I, Robert Reed Holloway was killed in action at the Battle of Monte Blanc Ridge in France in 1918, Harry Roe Wainwright died that year at the U.S. Navy Hospital in Portsmouth after contracting Spanish Flu and pneumonia, and Wilton Thomas Wainwright was killed in action at Verdun, France, one day before the war ended. In World War II, Harold McBride Moore was killed in a plane crash in Tunisia, North Africa, in 1943; Alfred Moody Moore was killed in a plane crash while en route from Panama to San Jose, California, in 1944; Granville L. Adams, Jr. was declared missing in action after bailing out over the China Sea in 1944 and later declared dead; Earnest Thornton Holloway died of wounds received during the Battle of Leyton Gulf in 1944; John Ray Forrest was killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945; Joseph Clyde Edwards died of wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge in 1945; and Harry E. Wainwright died in a plane crash east of Hawaii in 1945. In Korea, Joseph Eugene Wood was reported missing in action and killed by hostile fire in South Korea in 1950, and Jack Sinclair Holloway was killed in action in 1952 after entering the Marine Corps in 1951. In Vietnam, David Bland Owen was killed in action at Long An in 1967; Richard Thomas Huggett was killed in action by hostile fire at Hua Nghia, South Vietnam, in 1968; Paul Adams Meyer died in 1969 during a C-130 crash into the English Channel while on temporary duty in England after serving two tours in Vietnam; and Gilbert Wayne Page was killed in action during the Battle of Hamburger Hill in 1969. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, Lance Corporal Kyle William Brown, a U.S. Marine who served one tour in Afghanistan and two in Iraq, was killed by sniper fire near Fallujah, Iraq, in 2006 and was awarded the Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
