During the American Revolution, after the fall of Charleston in 1780, Francis Marion emerged to lead the Williamsburg militia as the senior Regimental Continental Officer not captured or paroled. He recruited patriots, ambushed the British and Loyalists, and controlled the supply routes to Camden. In the Southern Campaign, the British lost the war in the South, and the Patriots won independence.
