In downtown Genoa, Nevada, this site preserves the place remembered as the state’s first permanent nonnative settlement. Mormon pioneers established Mormon Station here in 1851 as a trading post and waystation on the Carson Route of the California Trail, where emigrants rested and resupplied while crossing the Great Basin and approaching the Sierra. The original post survived until a major fire destroyed much of Genoa in June 1910, including what remained of the station. Preservation efforts began in the mid-20th century, leading to reconstruction of the stockade in 1947 and state park management beginning in 1957.
