At approximately 4:00 p.m., Cleburne's division moved west from the Rally Hill Pike, crossed a light strip of woods after cresting the hill west of the pike, and entered an open field. Its arc of march carried it across the front of Bradley's brigade, which raked the exposed right flank of Lowrey's brigade with very destructive fire. Because of the division's alignment, Lowrey had to wheel his brigade to the right and fight Bradley without assistance. After Lowrey warned that the enemy was about to charge his flank, Cleburne replied, "I'll charge them!" and turned his other two brigades to support Lowrey, changing their line of advance from west to north. Although Lowrey's brigade was stunned by Bradley's initial fire, many of the Federals were inexperienced and poorly drilled recruits in their first fight, while they faced hardened veterans. As Govan and Granbury came on line with Lowrey, Cleburne's division advanced en masse, and Bradley's lines wavered, then crumbled, and finally shattered. Bradley was wounded in the assault, the highest-ranking officer on either side to become a casualty at Spring Hill.
