This mill, which may date from about 1825 and was built on land owned by Jesse Field, became best known as Robbins Mill or Holton Mill after Rev. Alexander and Mary (Weatherly) Robbins bought it in 1853. During the Civil War, Mrs. Robbins operated the mill, negotiated a draft deferment for the miller, J.F. Holton, and supplied flour to the Confederate Army, with the mill's flour bags imprinted "Cliff Mill." Holton ran the mill until 1884, when Oakdale Mills bought it and removed the dam. The miller's house, built about 1850, retains original architectural features.
