Since around 1892, the sunflower has been an important symbol of Spiritualism. Throughout Camp Chesterfield, homes and buildings are often decorated with sunflower motifs because of its strong connection to Spiritualism. Native to the United States but transplanted all over the world, the sunflower parallels Spiritualism, which by 1948 had been recognized as a religion in 38 nations, making it one of three American-made religions exported rather than imported to the United States. Spiritualism’s motto declares, “As the Sunflower turns its face to the Light of the Sun – So let Spiritualism turn the face of humanity to the Light of the Truth.” Because sunflowers always turn toward the sun, Spiritualists likewise turn toward the light of God. The sunflower’s sturdy, hardy, well-grounded stalk and its value as a rich source of minerals and vitamins also reflect Spiritualism’s emphasis on strong character together with physical and spiritual healing.
