Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, grew from the ambitious collecting of Thomas Gilcrease, a Muscogee Creek oilman who built a major museum devoted to the art, history, and Native American heritage of the American West. After financial strain threatened the collection in the early 1950s, Tulsa voters acted to keep it in the city, and Gilcrease transferred the collection and later the grounds to Tulsa. The museum now holds extensive art, artifact, and archival collections from across the Americas, supports research and repatriation work with Native Nations, and is undergoing a large-scale renewal with a newly designed replacement building.
