Fort Vancouver National Historic Site unites two places in Washington and Oregon that trace the region’s fur trade, early U.S. military presence, and colonial-era settlement. At Vancouver, the site preserves the location of Fort Vancouver, founded in 1824 as the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Pacific Coast headquarters under John McLoughlin, later joined by Vancouver Barracks after U.S. control followed the 1846 Treaty of Oregon. The original fort was abandoned in 1860 and burned in 1866; today’s buildings are reconstructions on the original site. In Oregon City, the site preserves McLoughlin’s former home and the neighboring Barclay House, both saved, moved, and restored after their nineteenth-century use.
