At New Salem, Abraham Lincoln read Mentor Graham's books and in 1833 studied grammar and surveying under him. Graham, who said, "I think I may say that he was my scholar and I was his teacher," taught in Kentucky and Illinois for more than fifty years, died in South Dakota, and in 1933 had his remains removed here.
