Kisatchie Hills Wilderness is an 8,701-acre wilderness area in Louisiana within Kisatchie National Forest, managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It is notable for terrain unusually rugged for the state and for its undeveloped backcountry, which can be reached only on foot or horseback. The area’s main route is the 7-mile Backbone Trail, a popular path for day hikes and overnight backpacking, with two shorter spur trails branching from it. Bayou Cypre, a sand-bottomed stream fed by many tributaries, drains the wilderness and crosses its eastern boundary, and anyone traveling the full Backbone Trail must wade through it.
