The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia occupies 127 acres of the former Rancho Santa Anita, a landscape long defined by springs, ponds, and Baldwin Lake. Before becoming a public garden, it was a year-round water source that attracted wildlife and Native American settlement and was likely the site of the Tongva village of Aleupkigna. The rancho was granted in 1839 to Hugo Reid and his Tongva wife, Victoria, and later gained much of its lasting character under Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin after 1875. Established as a public arboretum in 1947, it grew into a major botanical, historic, and cultural site known for its collections, preserved buildings, peafowl, and film appearances.
