At the annual meeting of the General Congregational Association of Florida held at Orange City on 29 January 1885, the movement that resulted in the establishment of Rollins College, Florida’s oldest institution of higher education, was initiated. At a special meeting held at Orange City on 17 April 1885, the location of the college was awarded to Winter Park, thirty miles south of Orange City on this highway.
