Benton Harbor established this agricultural marketing facility in 1870 at the city wharf to provide a market for the products of Michigan's fruit belt. As the industry grew and prospered, the market moved to the area of the C & O station in 1900, then to Territorial Street in 1925, and later in 1930 to Ninth and Market Streets, where it remained until 1966. Relocated and constructed on this site in 1967-1968 by authority of the Benton Harbor City Commission, the new facility was dedicated on May 22, 1968, to meet the future marketing needs of Michigan-grown agricultural products.
