The Indiana Territorial Capitol in Vincennes served as the center of government for the Indiana Territory from 1800 to 1813, during the years before Indiana achieved statehood. Built between 1800 and 1805 as a simple two-story frame structure, it reflected the practical character of an early frontier capital rather than architectural grandeur. Also known as the Indiana Territory State Memorial and Legislative Hall, it is significant for its role in administering the territory and for preserving Vincennes's place in Indiana's early political history. Moved to its present site in 1949, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and stands within the Vincennes Historic District.
