At Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first successful, sustained, powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine on December 17, 1903, after years of gliding experiments on the windy, isolated Outer Banks. The memorial landscape preserves the flight field and Kill Devil Hill, with markers for the 1903 flights, reconstructed sheds representing the brothers' camp, and a granite tower dedicated in 1932. Later additions, including a visitor center with aviation exhibits and a sculpture of the first takeoff, reinforce the site's importance as one of the central places in the history of controlled flight and modern aviation.
