As a result of the Battle of Hartville in Missouri on 11 January 1863, the remains of Confederate soldiers killed there lie on this site. Those named include men from Shelby’s Brigade, Gordon’s Regiment, Gilkey’s Regiment, Thompson’s Regiment, Porter’s Brigade, Burbridge’s Regiment, Brown’s Battery, Jeffer’s Regiment, and Greene’s Regiment, among them Captains James Garrett, Charles M. Turpin, and R.M. Dupy; Lieutenants Thomas W. Royster and Jerry Brey; Sergeant Z.M. Simpson; and numerous privates, along with others who may be unknown.
