Manning Memorial Light
Transportation
Manning Memorial Light, near Empire, Michigan, is an unusual modern lighthouse in a state better known for older Great Lakes lights. It was built in memory of longtime resident Robert H. Manning, who often fished offshore and had said a lighthouse there would aid navigation after dark. After his death in 1989, friends and relatives raised money to create the light, which was illuminated in 1990. Now Michigan’s second newest lighthouse and one of only three memorial lights in the state, it reflects a community tribute rather than a government initiative. Its influence later reached Arizona through a scaled-down replica at Lake Havasu City.
