Cantonment Wilkinson-ville, on the Ohio River three miles south of here, was established in 1797 by Lt. Col. David Strong as a post of the United States Army and was named for Gen. James Wilkinson. It was garrisoned until 1804. Colonel Strong and scores of soldiers who died on duty are buried here.
