Platted in 1904 and incorporated in 1910, Harlingen was named by founder Lon C. Hill, Sr. for a town in Holland. Hill, who lived from 1862 to 1935, promoted the railroad and early business enterprises. The city was the place where the first irrigation district and first navigation district in the Rio Grande Valley were organized, and it became a center for finance, wholesale business, commerce, and medical services. It was the site of Harlingen State Tuberculosis Hospital, Rio Grande State Center for Mental Health and Mental Retardation, and Valley Baptist Hospital, and the home of Marine Military Academy, the "Confederate Air Force" Museum, and the Lower Valley Historical Museum.
