After the shooting of Jimmie Lee Jackson in nearby Marion, Alabama, Brown Chapel changed from a sanctuary into a staging area and headquarters for the Selma march. In a passionate sermon, SCLC worker James Bevel urged a pilgrimage to the State Capitol to honor Lee and bring grief and grievances to Governor Wallace's doorstep, and his idea of a march to Montgomery quickly took hold. Within days, civil rights workers at Brown Chapel were gathering sleeping bags, tents, and raingear for the effort. On March 7, 1965, SCLC leader Hosea Williams and SNCC chairman John Lewis left Brown Chapel and led marchers over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The violence of Bloody Sunday drove them back to the chapel, but it also increased support, as people from across the United States came to Selma to wait at Brown Chapel for another chance to march two days later.
