Horseshoe Curve was the first railroad to cross the Allegheny Mountains between Harrisburg and Pittsburgn, with a maximum grade of 1.87 percent. Engineered by J. Edgar Thomson one hundred fifty years ago, the Pennsylvania Railroad opened the line on February 15, 1854.
